Hidden Allergens: What is your meat fed?

What is your meat fed? Start asking the question if you haven't already.

Recently, I'd been having small soy reactions but I couldn't pinpoint the culprit. This led me to the dreaded double and triple checking all over again, but I'll spare you the details. One of the companies I contacted even though the label stated that the pork sausage was soy free, informed me of the possible risk of cross contamination from the pig feed.


Have you been sickened or reacted to soy or gluten in meat feed?

  3. I have a moderate allergy to soy. I can eat things with soybean oil or soy lecithin in them, but cannot have any kind of soy that is unprocessed. I recently went out to dinner and ordered barbecued chicken. One bite of the chicken and I felt intense pain in my stomach and esophagus and then vomited several times. I was told that the barbecue sauce had soybean oil in it, but I've never had a reaction to soybean oil AND I've read and been told by allergy doctors that soybean oil won't cause a reaction because it lacks the proteins that cause reactions. I was struggling to figure out WHY I had such an intense reaction from the chicken. I also recall times when I've eaten pre-cooked chicken from Trader Joe's and felt a similar reaction in my chest (it feels like my esophagus has a balloon inside of it that is expanding -- inflammation) but it went away and wasn't nearly as severe. Anyway, this is making me wonder if perhaps these chickens were fed soy? The restaurant claimed that they didn't use soy in the preparation of the meal, and the only soy ingredient they found was the soybean oil in the barbecue sauce.... so, I'm not sure what else it could be.

    Anyway, I'm glad I stumbled upon this as it brought up some items I had not considered before. I live in the Royal Oak area and see that you're around Ann Arbor. I usually buy grass-fed organic beef and organic chicken from Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, but I realize that "organic" chicken may still be fed soy or corn. I haven't looked into the chicken at Whole Foods as much... do you buy meat from anywhere in particular? Any suggestions as to where I can find good chicken meat and eggs?

    Hi Laurence, I am still on the search for soy-free chicken, but I think I may have found who will carry it. I buy soy free eggs from People's Food Coop in Ann Arbor (also carried at Arbor Farms Market and the Farmer's Market in Kerrytown). The soy free eggs are from Swartz Farms and are clearly labeled soy free and corn free. I can't even tell you the amount of times I've had serious reactions from chicken, pork, eggs, etc. that were fed soy. Even farmed seafood are fed soy most of the time. I have yet to find any chicken meat, pork/bacon, or sausages that are okay for me to eat. I am planning a trip to the farmers market to talk with Swartz Farms about where/if they also distribute soy free chicken, since they obviously have them because of the soy free eggs. They don't have a website unfortunately, otherwise I'd link to them. I used to buy soy free eggs from TropicalTraditions.com but they're a bit too pricey for my taste. They have soy free meat and eggs, but I'd rather stay local. Let me know if you try the eggs or find any soy free chicken/meat...you'll be the first to know when I find out =)

  5. Also, I almost forgot! I buy only wild caught fish and seafood from Whole Foods as well as only grassfed beef and grassfed lamb on occasion. I've cut way back on my meat consumption since the soy allergy though, as I'm still healing my digestive system from soy and gluten damages.
