Diets Don't Work, Lifestyles Do.


Different diets and fads are abundant. But the one thing they almost all have in common is that they are no more than a temporary break from bad habits. Going back to eating overly sugary and processed "food" after a health kick is a sure fire way to undo all the health you've pumped into your body during 3 miserable weeks of detox.

Diets will lock you into a perpetual, unhealthy cycle that feeds off of itself until permanent healthy changes are made.

So where do you start when you're starting a healthy lifestyle?

  1. Start slow. If your body is used to high quantities of sugar, fat, and highly processed foods, switching to a healthy meal plan of lean meat, vegetables and low glucose fruits will trigger a natural detox. You may feel worse at the start than you felt before. When making a slow and gradual transition, all the toxins leaving your body won't hit your system at once. This way, you won't overload your liver.

  2. (Almost) Everything in moderation.A large reason why people relapse after starting a rigorous diet or health kick is because they find the changes too drastic and limited. Being on an extremely restricted and mandatory meal plan myself, I completely understand this mentality. Sometimes you just want out. But with an "everything in moderation" lifestyle, you don't have to miss out all the time. My rule is generally 80% healthy, 20% indulgent. It really keeps me in check and balance. There are certainly things you never want to eat though, such as trans fats.

  3. Play with taste. Eating more vegetables more often doesn't mean it has to taste healthy and boring. Learn to use spices and food combinations to your advantage. Not only will adding things like fresh herbs, cayenne pepper, curry powder, turmeric, and parsley add to your arsenal in the kitchen and make your cooking more versatile, these things blast away bland taste with just a pinch. Try making a creamy curried cauliflower soup (shown below) by boiling a chopped head of cauliflower and one diced onion with curry powder, garlic, turmeric, cayenne, black pepper and salt until the vegetables are softened. Add a cup of coconut milk and reduce the heat. Let it simmer for a few minutes, then blend the mixture with a high speed blender. You won't even know you're eating vegetables. I promise. 

  4. Avoid Processed Sugar. We are stuck on the dopamine effect. Meaning, our bodies crave sugar and fats when they are consumed frequently. They directly tap into our dopamine release, which is associated with rewards and satisfaction. It can sometimes take a lot to break this "addiction", but it's worth it knowing that many researchers and scientists are now calling excess sugar consumption toxic. Below is a great video with Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN on the question of sugar being recognized as a toxin.

  5. Reap the Benefits.It's amazing what the power of good food does. Let food be your medicine and erase the root cause of many avoidable illnesses and disease. For instance, want to avoid high cholesterol? Instead of popping a pill after it's already too late, load up on heart healthy foods like monounsaturated fats found in almonds, olive oils, and avocado before it becomes a problem. You'll thrive with abundant energy by eating more raw vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts, and natural protein rich foods. You'll probably find that you don't actually need to drink even one cup of coffee to stay energized throughout the day. Nutrients are necessary. And you simply can't get them from a processed bag of junk foods.

When you change your eating habits for good, it changes your mindset and your lifestyle with little extra effort. An equilibrium is achieved and balance comes more naturally as a result. The ups and downs of sugar highs and crashes subside, weight management becomes attainable, and you still feel like you're not missing out on any awesome food.

Remember: Diets don't work. Life changes do. You only have so long.

Gluten Free Happy Hour

For the newly diagnosed food allergic, gluten intolerant, or Celiac individual, the question I've been asked quite often is...
Okay, so you've told me what I can eat. Now what the hell can I drink?

I stick to basic and classic alcohols that aren't distilled from grains-- no fancy stuff or fake flavorings. You can easily dress up some plain rum or tequila yourself without the help of pre-made mixers and coolers (which often contain barley malt and other additives from soy). There is some controversy over whether grain distilled liquors are okay for Celiac or gluten intolerant individuals to consume. I can tell you from my experience, I have to stay away. Vodka distilled from grain has wrecked some pretty extreme havoc on me in the past and I'm not eager to do it again.

Though most vodkas are out for me, Ciroc vodka is made from grapes instead of grain. There are also some good potato vodkas out there, but a word of warning--they can be pretty strong!

My favorites/go-to's for a Gluten-free, Soy free, Nut free, Cocktail Party:



  1. Bacardi Superior Rum

  2. Groundswell Organic White Table Wine (or Groundswell Red)

  3. Ciroc Vodka (from grapes, original frost flavor. I'm not sure on the other berry flavors).

  4. Luksusowa Polish Potato Vodka 

  5. Estancia Riesling (White Wine). I love the fruity flavor of a good Riesling. Don't drink Wine if you are sensitive to yeast or sulfites. I've gotten much less sensitive to yeast, which is why I include it here.

  6. 365 Whole Foods Goat Cheese (contains Milk, Casein).  Cheese platters and Wine. Need I say more?

  7. Neon Flexi-Straws for pretty, fun smoothie Cocktails

  8. Jose Cuervo Especial Tequila

  9. Fresh Flowers. Roses are always a classic.

  10. Enjoy Life Crunchy Cookies (allergen free).

I don't drink too often, but when I do, I....don't drink Dos Equis. Instead I focus on what I can drink and jazz it up myself to make it special. I love blending fresh pineapple, strawberries, ice, and white rum together to make a delicious spiked tropical smoothie. Adding fresh organic fruits and herbs as garnish and fun straws just gives that extra special touch. Try a sprig of fresh basil or mint in your next homemade cocktail.

Gluten Free Italian Antipasti (Appetizer)


Y has been a genius in the kitchen lately and has been throwing together little delicious bites left and right. We've recently been branching out and finding new or forgotten food gems to incorporate into our dishes. After the soy allergy diagnosis, I realized just buying canned food (example, tuna) became more difficult as soy is added to nearly everything. Yes even most canned tuna.

Luckily, our exploring of Whole Foods Market has been amazing for finding simple, delicious food with no additives or fillers. We recently picked up goat cheese with no vegetable rennet (which is made from soy often), black olives packed in water instead of vegetable oil, and soft brown rice tortillas.

Y put together a great Italian Antipasti (appetizer) dish that had me raving. It was a simple yet sophisticated pairing that let each flavor shine and compliment the other tastes easily. We're definitely making these again for my birthday cocktail night.



Gluten Free Italian Antipasti

(No Soy, Gluten, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Eggs, or Wheat. Contains Dairy).

  • Food for Life Brown Rice Tortillas cut into about 2 inch squares, or gf cracker of choice.
  • Small slice of Goat Cheese
  • Roma tomato, sliced
  • Kalamata Olives, halved. 1 to each antipasti
  • 1 sprig of Fresh Dill to each antipasti

Pair with a homemade veggie juice, grape juice, or allergen free cocktail. I've been slowly reintroducing Red Wine back into my diet and this pairing was fabulous.

What almost dying taught me.

 
Capture the moment. Live like you mean it.



Before last summer, I'd never prayed for my life before. I'd never felt the sharp jab of mortality. What I had felt before was the ease with which air effortlessly passed into my body and saturated me with life. What I'll never feel again is the naive ungratefulness I knew before I almost died.

Unknowingly, I was suffering a severe and life threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis shock. My limbs went numb, my stomach convulsed, and my throat began to close up to the point where I was gasping for air. I clutched for items to hold onto to get some sort of stability and the fleeting normal physical feelings. But all I could think about was how much I had taken for granted in my life as the bulging lump in my throat threatened to take it all away. And then I saw a fuzzy blackness began to crawl over my peripheral vision.

Who was I to be judging the universe? Complaining about trivial things? I can tell you that instances where you had ridiculously complained about unimportant things, like that time you ordered a water with ice and received a warm water with no ice, flash before you when your body is failing fast and life is leaving. You remember how you treasured material things more than the life and feelings of a poor stranger. Then you get smacked in the face. Hard. You see the beautiful shades of color that seemed so ordinary before shining brilliant and vivid, waking you. You fall to the ground with the gravity of the world around you and are instantly and permanently humbled. You realize how small and how big your life is all at once. Everything is pulsing, and in that moment you are truly alive.

You will never be the same. And it's a blessing.

I was able to ride out this deadly allergic reaction (to soy) due to the genius of my boyfriend who gave me antihistamines even though he wasn't sure what was happening while we waited for the ambulance to arrive.

I'm forever grateful for the life that pulses through my veins and the time I have here. Don't miss a moment. I don't have to tell you that you never know what will happen next. If I ever feel my spirit dying again, I'll breathe and remember.

Enjoy Life Plentils Review


The well over a week long hiatus is officially over!

My life has been pretty busy with starting a new job these past few weeks, so I apologize for the infrequent and haphazard posting as of late. But we're back on track and have a huge list of topics to cover over the next few weeks. Today, I'm going to hand the keys over to Yan for his first official post on the blog! For those of you who are new to the blog, Yan is my boyfriend and has been there for me every step of the way through most of my worst allergic reactions to eventually my severe soy allergy diagnosis. He was with me before the allergy development and always supported my gluten free lifestyle due to celiac/gluten intolerance.

Yan grew up in Belarus and moved to the U.S. when he was 13. He also has some food allergies, but I'll leave that to him to explain. Without further ado...


YC: Hello guys! I'm excited to post here today! Beth and I are also excited that she now has an updated domain name of SprinklesandAllergies.com!

Recently Enjoy Life sent Bethany a sample of Plentils, but because of her allergies to legumes I offered to taste them instead of her. I found them to be delicious and quite addictive with my favorite flavor being dill and sour cream. These Plentils prove to be a wonderful quick snack and everyone who'd try them should be surprised to find out that they are free of top 8 allergens. I'm allergic to various fresh fruits and vegetables foods due to my hay fever, so I appreciate Enjoy Life's sensitivities to those living with multiple food allergies. (Some of the foods I'm allergic to include fresh celery, cherries, peaches, apples, cilantro, and many more. I can eat most of these foods after they've been cooked, however).


The Enjoy Life Plentils come in 4 flavors: Dill & Sour Cream, Light Sea Salt, Margherita Pizza, and Garlic & Parmesan. They're crunchy, delicious, and offer an awesome alternative to regular potato chips. The addition of lentils adds more protein to the chip which is a nice twist.
